ILSB Construction Update from User Coordinators, November 7, 2006
Statement from Dr. Ewing and Dr. Perry regarding upcoming ILSB construction activities and their impact on parking and traffic in the construction area
In early October, President Gates sent a NEO e-mail to the campus community about campus construction projects. In that message he indicated that one of our primary goals during this "extreme makeover" is to keep you informed of the changes and possible inconveniences that these significant improvements are bringing to our campus.
We're writing today to alert you that the pace of construction activities on and around the site of the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building (ILSB) is increasing and will necessitate the implementation of a number of road closures and detours between now and the end of January. We recognize that these closures may cause you some inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation during the construction process. Transportation Services has been working with an advisory committee, composed students, faculty, and staff, to develop alternative parking plans for those displaced during the construction period and to ensure that traffic continues to flow safely around campus. Similarly we are working to make sure that buildings remain accessible and that pedestrian traffic will continue to flow smoothly and safely in the area.
Specific information about each of the activities and associated road closures and/or detours will be communicated in separate e-mail messages from the ILSB user coordinator contact. In addition, detailed information on this construction project as well as all campus construction projects is available on the Campus Construction Web site, which is accessible from the Texas A&M home page ("Campus Construction" link in the maroon bar near the bottom of the page).
The decisions about what areas are to be closed and when they are to be closed is the result of a group discussion that includes input from a wide array of offices, including Student Affairs, Transportation Services, the ILSB user coordinators, and Facilities Planning, as well as representatives from the construction company. Please feel free to contact the ILSB user coordinators by e-mail with any questions about the construction process. The contact is Jim Calvin, executive associate vice president for research, and his e-mail address is j-calvin@tamu.edu.
Though this work may cause some temporary difficulties in campus transit, the end result of this and other coming construction tasks will be significant improvements to our campus that directly support the Faculty Reinvestment Program and Texas A&M's goal of enhancing the educational experience of students by improving student-faculty ratios and reducing class sizes.
